Hydro Timber Recovery
Hundreds of years ago during the precolonial era, the Amazon rain forest was pristine and virtually untouched. The abundance and riches of this exotic forest lured Europeans to explore it. Massive old growth trees were felled and harvested, the timber was to be used to build castles, bridges, and naval ships. The logs were floated down the rivers to the port where they would be shipped back to Europe. The larger logs would sink to the bottom of the rivers where they would be lost for centuries. Approximately 50 years ago large hydro-dam lakes were built to create inexpensive clean power by damming the rivers in the rainforest. The standing trees remained in the lakes and are now perfectly preserved and are being harvested.
Whole Logs
Whole logs are harvested from the man-made lake created by Alcoa Aluminum 60 years ago.
Back-Flooded Forest
Preserved in the lake by Mineral-laden water flowing through the wood leading to permineralization.
